Digital Craft Exercise - 2002
Modelling an Art Gallery
|
This course explores the Craft of the Digital in Architecture and Building. It uses the internet to document and assist the collaboration of two people collaborating in the construction of a 3D model of a significant recent daylit Art Gallery. It explores the role of global illumination (photon mapping) in the development of a design understanding of the interplay of light and shade under daylight as well as electric light. It uses the Art Gallery/Museum, "the modern day cathedral" (Mario Botta in the San Francisco Chronicle 1994) as a vehicle to develop this understanding.

Major modelling project
The kunsthaus Gallery in Bregenz Germany
By Peter Zumthor
|
The major project for the paper was to select and model a museum on one of three cad programs. Then render the model while evolving a theme relating to an aspect of the building. The gallery Emily and I chose was the kunsthaus in bregenz germany by Peter Zumthor. To find out more about Peter Zumthor click on this link. to find out more about kunsthaus for photos of kunsthaus click here pete

The Theme
|
An architectural theme of interset was follow to give the final images a pont as opposed to unconnected simulations of the models. My theme was an alternative lighting theme that was inspired by a photo of the museum. Although the museum is designed to have discrete and mimimal interiors to highlight the art work i looked at how (just by changing the lighting effects above the etched galss ceiling) the space was changed. although surprisingly the light on the art works was not significantly compromisped. the effect on the space was to become more "moody" for want of a better term |
