Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art

"Kiasma has brought a new dimension to art museum architecture" - Tuula Arkio (Museum Director)

The Museum of Contemporary Art(Kiasma) is situated in the heart of Helsinki. It sits at the foot of the Parliament building to the West, with Eliel Saarinen's Helsinki Station to the east, and Alvar Aalto's Finlandia Hall to the north..

The new building project for Kiasma, began in 1992, after the architect 'Steven Holl' won the competition with his entry entry named "Chiasma".

"Chiasma" is derived from the Greek letter "chi" and means "crossing" or "exchange". This was a driving concept of Steven Holl's scheme. The building is made up of two main parts, with the "crossing" between them.
